Dr. Ryan Baker researches how students use and learn from educational games, intelligent tutors, and other kinds of educational software. Drawing on the fields of educational data mining, learning analytics, and human–computer interaction, he develops methods for mining the data that come out of the interactions between students and educational software. He then uses this information to improve our understanding of how students respond to educational software, and how these responses influence their learning.
Prior to joining Penn GSE, Dr. Baker was an associate professor in the Department of Human Development at Teachers College, Columbia University. While at Teachers College, he taught the “Big Data and Education” MOOC twice, with total enrollment of more than 50,000 students. He has served as founding president of the International Educational Data Mining Society, where he currently serves on the board of directors. He has been co-author on nine award-winning papers. He serves as co-lead of the Big Data in Education spoke of the NSF Northeast Big Data Hub.
Dr. Katy Börner is Victor H. Yngve Distinguished Professor of Engineering and Information Science in the School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, Core Faculty of Cognitive Science at Indiana University. She holds an MS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Technology in Leipzig (1991) and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Kaiserslautern (1997). She is an expert in data visualization and the mapping of science (http://scimaps.org) and serves as a PI for NSF AISL entitled Data Visualization Literacy: Research and Tools that Advance Public Understanding of Scientific Data. Dr. Shane Dawson is the Director of the Teaching Innovation Unit and Professor of Learning Analytics at the University of South Australia. Shane’s research focuses on the use of social network analysis and learner ICT interaction data to inform and benchmark teaching and learning quality. Shane is a founding executive member of the Society for Learning Analytics Research and past program and conference chair of the International Learning Analytics and Knowledge conference. He is a co-developer of numerous open source software including the Online Video Annotations for Learning (OVAL) and SNAPP a social network visualization tool designed for teaching staff to better understand, identify and evaluate student learning, engagement, academic performance and creative capacity
An artist by training, Dr. Kylie Peppler is an Associate Professor of Informatics and Education and engages in research that focuses on the intersection of arts, computational technologies and interest-driven learning. In addition to serving as the Director of the Creativity Labs, Dr. Peppler is the Chief Learning Officer at Collective Shift/LRNG, the former lead of the MacArthur Foundation’s Make-to-Learn initiative, an advisor to the Connected Learning Research Network, and a member of the 2016 and 2017 National Educational Technology Plan Committee, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. Peppler was on the original NSF-sponsored Scratch team during the initial design and early study of the Scratch platform. Since this time, she has specialized in studying e-textile design with the LilyPad Arduino.
Dr. Michael Richey is the Chief Learning Scientist and Associate Technical Fellow currently assigned to support educational technology and innovation research at The Boeing Company. Michael is responsible for leading a team conducting engineering education research projects that focus on improving the learning experience for students, incumbent engineers and technicians. His research encompasses, Complexity, Sociotechnical Systems, Learning Curves, and Engineering Education Research. The educational programs and research focus on practical understanding of human learning and the design of technology-enhanced learning environments and promoting global excellence in engineering and learning technology to develop future generations of entrepreneurially-minded engineers. Michael has served on various advisory groups including, the editorial board of the Journal of Engineering Education, Boeing Higher Education Integration Board, National Academy of Engineering, American Society for Engineering Education Project Board and the National Science Foundation I-UCRC Industry University Collaborative Research Center Advisory Board.
Michael has authored-co-authored over 30 publications in leading journals including Science Magazine, The Journal of Engineering Education and INCOSE addressing topics in large scale system integration, learning sciences and systems engineering. Michael often represents Boeing internationally and domestically as a speaker – presenter and has authored multiple patents on Computer-Aided Design and Computer-Aided Manufacturing, with disclosures focused on system engineering and elegant design. He is an adjunct professor in the Colorado State University School of Education and Adjunct Faculty at Washington State University: School of Mechanical and Material Engineering (MME).
Dr. George Siemens co-leads the development of the Center for Change and Complexity in Learning (C3L) at University of South Australia. He is Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas, Arlington. He has delivered keynote addresses in more than 35 countries on the influence of technology and media on education, organizations, and society. He has served as PI or Co-PI on grants funded by NSF, SSHRC (Canada), Intel, Boeing, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Soros Foundation. He has received numerous awards, including honorary doctorates from Universidad de San Martín de Porres and Fraser Valley University for his pioneering work in learning, technology, and networks.
